Black Trout Adit and Gliwice Radio Tower with kids

What is a visit to the Black Trout Adit (Sztolnia Czarnego Pstraga) in Tarnowskie Gory like? You travel by boat with a guide along an underground tunnel, for about 600 m. The adit is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. We sailed through it in August 2020, and earlier that day we stood under the wooden tower of the Gliwice Radio Tower.

The day before we were in the Gold Mine in Zloty Stok. The plan of the whole 2020 holiday is in the post Summer holidays in Poland with kids 2020.

Gliwice Radio Tower and the sensory park

On Sunday 9 August we drove from the campsite to Gliwice and started with the Gliwice Radio Tower. Its tower is about 111 m high and built from larch beams. It was here on 31 August 1939 that the Germans staged the Gleiwitz incident, a pretext for the outbreak of World War II.

The kids liked the free sensory park next to the tower best. It has instruments you can play: metal pipes, a gong and big parabolic antennas that let you talk to each other from far away.

A boat trip in the Black Trout Adit

From Gliwice we drove 21 km to Tarnowskie Gory. The Black Trout Adit lies in the forest, in Repecki Park. One of the entrances leads through the stone rotunda of the Ewa shaft.

Down below we got into a boat. The boat sails along a narrow tunnel cut in the rock and lit with lamps. We wore masks and scarves over our faces for the whole trip, but you can still see our smiles in the photos.

The adit was part of a system that drained water from the old lead and silver mines.

Dinner in Bytom and a second night at Camp9

For dinner we went to the Dziadek do Orzechow (Nutcracker) inn in Bytom. For the night we went back to the small Camp9 campsite in Tarnowskie Gory, and we ended the evening with a board game at a wooden table.

In the evening the whole family plays a board game at a wooden table at Camp9.

Fun fact

The historic lead, silver and zinc mine in Tarnowskie Gory, together with its underground water management system, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.

The next day

The next day we went to the amusement park in Chorzow: Legendia with kids.
