Konewka railway bunker with kids - a shelter for a whole train
What can you see in the railway bunker in Konewka? It is a concrete tunnel about 380 m long, built in 1940-1941 for German staff trains. Next to it there are smaller technical bunkers, and through one of them you can walk along an underground passage to the main tunnel. We visited it with four kids in August 2020, on our way from the Holy Cross Mountains to the Sulejow Reservoir.
Before that we spent two days at Lysica and Holy Cross. The plan of our whole 2020 holiday is in the post Poland road trip with kids 2020.
From Suchedniow to Konewka
On Monday 17 August we packed our tent in Suchedniow and drove 115 km to the village of Konewka, near Spala and Tomaszow Mazowiecki. At the entrance, visitors are welcomed by a guardhouse with the word "Halt" and a barrier, where we took our first photo.

A shelter for a whole train
The Germans built the bunker in Konewka at the beginning of the Second World War as part of the Anlage Mitte complex. A whole staff train could hide inside. "Such a small wagon and such a long bunker," the kids wondered when they heard that a whole train fitted inside. At the entrance you can still see a piece of track, and inside stand a small wagon and an old radio.

On hands and knees through an underground passage
Next to the main tunnel there are smaller technical bunkers. They had electric generators, a boiler room, water tanks and fans, which pushed warmed and filtered air into the bunker. From the building of the former power station, a technical passage about 80 m long leads to the main bunker.
This was the biggest adventure of the day. The passage is so low that only our youngest could walk through it upright. The rest of the family crawled through on hands and knees, watching out for puddles.
Camping Los by the Sulejow Reservoir
For the night we went to Camping Los in Leonow near Wolborz, by the Sulejow Reservoir. The campsite was in its first season then. The kids immediately found a playground with a red bus, and at the reception stood a colourful pole with signs pointing to Paris, Barcelona and Lisbon.

Fun fact
A similar railway bunker was built at the same time in Jelen near Tomaszow Mazowiecki. Both belonged to the same complex, and Konewka has been open to visitors since 2005.
Next day
The next day we saw the biggest hole in Poland, the open-pit mine in Belchatow: Giganty Mocy in Belchatow with kids.
