Postojna Cave - by train into the dragon's kingdom

How long does a visit to Postojna Cave take? About 1.5 hours. Part of the way you ride an electric train (the ride is 3.7 km long), and part you walk with an audio guide. The cave is about 10 °C all year round, so even in August you need a jacket.

From Čatež to Postojna

On 11 August we said goodbye to Terme Čatež and drove 150 km west. Our tickets were for a set time, and we were at the entrance at that time. It was 2021, so everyone wore face masks.

The yellow train

You go underground on an open yellow train. At first the kids kept asking where the cave actually was. The train passes through huge halls full of stalactites and stalagmites, lit so that you can see how big they really are.

On foot with an audio guide

At the station we got off and continued on foot. Everyone had an audio guide, and the halls have numbers you type in to hear the story of each place. The kids took care of typing the numbers. The halls are unbelievably big, and the path is well prepared: railings, good lighting and comfortable walkways. One of the halls sometimes hosts concerts.

The baby dragon of Postojna

The biggest excitement was the olm, an animal that lives in underground water. People call it the "baby dragon". You watch it in a tank in dim light, with no flash and no torches. The kids wondered for a long time if it would one day grow into a big dragon.

At the end of the walk there is a souvenir shop and a platform where the train takes you back to the surface. It is not a cheap attraction, but it is worth seeing at least once in your life.

You can see the train ride and the walk in our video:

From Postojna we still had 100 km to our next campsite: Camping Šobec by the river. Another cave we visited with kids: Demänovská Cave of Liberty.

Fun fact

The train in Postojna Cave has been running since 1872, and you can see the olm in the Vivarium, a part of the tour about underground animals.
