Walking on a wooden walkway over the turquoise Radovna river in Vintgar Gorge

Vintgar Gorge and St Catherine's church

How long is the Vintgar Gorge trail? The path is 1,600 m long and follows wooden walkways over the Radovna river to the 15-metre Šum waterfall. Today you book tickets online for a specific day, and you can walk through the gorge in one direction only.

Through the gorge

On 12 August we drove 9 km from Camping Šobec to Vintgar. At the entrance we first looked at the map and then went through the gate with our ticket. From the very first metres the water has an amazing turquoise colour. In the calmer spots the kids found trout standing still in the current.

The walkways are fixed to the rock walls, and the river rushes right below them. For kids it was just the right adventure: not too long, always something new, and a waterfall as a reward at the end.

Šum waterfall

At the end of the gorge the river drops over a step as the Šum waterfall. Behind it there is the exit gate and a drinks kiosk.

Uphill to St Catherine's

Instead of going back the same way, we took the trail uphill to the small church of St Catherine. The path goes through the forest, partly on wooden steps. At the top there was a meadow with a view of the valley and the mountains, and some goats by the fence, which the youngest kids loved right away.

At the end we asked our youngest if it was fun to go to the mountains. The answer: "Yes, just tiring."

The whole walk is in our video:

The day before we arrived at Camping Šobec, and the next day we went to Lake Bled.
