A three-week road trip through the Balkans with four kids. Seven countries, 5,000 km, a tent, and a blue Ford full of adventures – from waterfalls in Bosnia, through wild Albania, to the turquoise lakes of Croatia.

Vienna wasn’t our last stop because of palaces or opera. It was because Justynka had been dreaming about giant pandas for a long time. And in Vienna, there are pandas.

We left Klenovica heading north and ended up at a campsite just outside Zagreb. An artificial lake, rented kayaks and a quiet evening by the water – that’s how we closed our Croatian chapter.

Krka National Park is one of those places that makes an impression from the first moment. Wooden boardwalks lead you literally across the water, between cascades and reed islands. And back in 2017 you could still jump straight into the waterfall.

A chance reunion with Ania’s cousin, ten degrees cooler than Albania, and one of the best-preserved medieval port towns on the Adriatic. We stopped in Trogir for a few hours – and it was hard to leave.

The Bay of Kotor sent us off quietly. We left Montenegro before noon, crossed into Bosnia and Herzegovina and headed towards Mostar. The landscape shifted as we drove – the mountains softened, stone villages gave way to wider valleys. And…
