Kashubia with kids - Chmielno and Lake Klodno at the end of the summer

Where can you relax with kids in Kashubia? We chose Chmielno, a village on Lake Klodno and Lake Biale. There is a lifeguarded public beach on Klodno, holiday centres with their own piers and the famous Kashubian pottery of the Necel family. This is how we ended our 2020 holiday: three days by the lake after two and a half weeks on the road.

Before that we had been in Belchatow and Ciechocinek. The plan of our whole 2020 holiday is in the post Poland road trip with kids 2020.

Morning at the graduation towers in Ciechocinek

On Wednesday 19 August, before leaving, we went to the graduation towers (salt towers) in Ciechocinek once more. This time we went up and walked on the wooden top of the towers, along the troughs with brine. The kids sat on the edge of a trough, and we took a family selfie with a view of the park.
At the top we met a man who worked at the towers. He was not a guide, but he explained everything to us in great detail: how the towers were built, how they work and how brine is spread over the whole structure, with all the mechanics. He also told us when it is best to walk on which side of the towers. We learned more from him than from any information board.

Before noon we packed the Ford to the roof and set off north on the A1 motorway. It was about 200 km to Chmielno.

Bachus holiday centre on Lake Klodno

We spent the last nights of the holiday in the Bachus holiday centre in Chmielno. It is on Lake Klodno and has its own beach with a pier. After two weeks of moving from campsite to campsite, we could finally stay in one place.

We spent Thursday 20 August by the lake. On the pier and in the water there was plenty to do:

  • a leaning tree trunk over the lake worked as a bench and a trampoline for the kids,
  • dad paddled on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) with our daughter in an orange life jacket,
  • pedal boats waited by the shore.

In the evening we went to a viewpoint above the lake. The kids took turns looking through binoculars while the sun set over the water.

The beach in Chmielno and a Kashubian lunch

On Friday 21 August we went to the beach in Chmielno on Lake Klodno. Our daughters built sandcastles, and the rest of us swam by the pier, where ducks were swimming around.

For our farewell lunch we chose the Chëcz u Kaszëbë restaurant in Chmielno, on Lake Biale. After lunch we had only 190 km left to get home.

Fun fact

Chmielno is famous for Kashubian pottery. The Necel family has been making pots here for generations, and in the Museum of Kashubian Pottery you can see their work with typical patterns: the tulip, the Kashubian star and the fish scale.

The whole trip

This is how our 2020 holiday ended: from the Czech rock towns through Silesia, the Jura and the Holy Cross Mountains to Kashubia. All the stages, kilometres and campsites are in the post Poland road trip with kids 2020, and places in Poland in our guide Poland with kids.
